Greetings

Hello Lion Fam! Welcome to the second installment of our Running Newsletter series!

The NYC marathon is officially over but that doesn’t mean the training has to stop! If you did run however please take a well deserved break.

I wanted to take this opportunity to let everyone know that we’ve received a treadmill in our Greenpoint location! This new addition will finally allow us to perform TRUE gait and running analysis to collect data we can use to both prevent and treat walking and running related injuries!

So, you may ask, what can I expect from the running analysis?

As with all evaluations, our therapists discuss your specific pains, challenges and goals you want to achieve. This would be followed by an evaluation of posture and a battery of tests to determine strength, flexibility and/or neuromuscular deficits to name a few.

The real fun begins when we place you on the treadmill!

We will use video analysis to evaluate your running style and form looking for possible areas of improvements or for the cause of the problem itself! (Although it is usually multifactorial). For those of you that are interested in booking your analysis now CLICK THE BUTTON BELOW. For those that want to learn more about the process see below!

What exactly are we looking for?

As you might have guessed, lots of things! Running is a complex motion which relies on the entire body  to function properly and efficiently. We could go on for pages about what we look for and when but I’ll go over the 3 most common things we see here at Lion:

Hip Drop:

This is usually caused by weakness in the glute medius (the muscle on the side of your hip). These deficits can often cause ITB syndrome, hip or knee pain!

Dynamic Knee Valgus Collapse:

Take a look at the difference between the left and Right. You can see on the runner’s right leg the knee is dropping further towards the middle. This can be caused by issues above or below, the foot or the hip may be at fault!

Center of Mass Excursion

This is specifically looking at the amount of up and down “travel” your body goes through during a single running cycle. You can imagine the greater the excursion the greater the impact on the lower body you are incurring, now multiply that over 26.2 miles! Ouch!

As I said before, these are just a few of the things that we look for here at Lion PT. I could go on for days but why don’t you come in and see for yourself!

If you're saying to yourself "I think that's me!" or wondering if you fall into any of the categories mentioned above, click the button below!
