Greetings

Happy Fall Everyone! The coming of fall brings changing colors, Halloween, cool weather and of course the

NYC MARATHON!

At this time of year those of you who are training to run the marathon are in the thick of it! Training programs will have you really piling on the mileage and it’s right now that you may be at highest risk for injury!

Did you know that MOST running injuries don’t come from a single incident but usually from improper training and overuse!? Unlike other sports which require quick cutting or fast unstable movements such as tennis and football, running injuries tend to occur over a longer period of time.

The good news is that with proper training, these injuries can be completely avoided!

In this email we are going to talk about several of the most common running injuries that we’ve been seeing at Lion Physical Therapy.

  • Patellofemoral Pain syndrome, aka. “Runner’s Knee” (should have seen that coming)
    • Probably the most common cause of anterior knee pain we treat. The root cause of the pain can often be difficult to determine as the symptoms tend to be diffuse and sometimes difficult to replicate.
  • Stress Fractures
    • Stress fractures can technically occur throughout the low limb however most commonly occur in the metatarsals (the long bones of the foot) as well as the Tibia (the shin bone)
    • The most common symptoms of a stress fracture are pain with the associated activity and pinpoint tenderness when pressure is applied.
  • Plantar Fasciitis
    • We’ve all known someone with this condition in our lives as it’s the condition on our list that is common even outside of running.
    • This injury most commonly presents as pain with weightbearing at the bottom of heel right at the insertion of the fascia itself, however it can also cause pain along the entire arch as well.

While running can be an amazing exercise to keep you in tip-top shape and running a marathon is an amazing life goal, careful planning and good programming is a NECESSITY.

Thankfully, we are well equipped at Lion PT to not only help you rehab from injuries that you may have incurred already, but we can help you PREVENT injury altogether with a full comprehensive biomechanical exam as well as running analysis (new treadmill has been added to our GP office!).

Chronic Pain from Muscle Imbalances

Muscle imbalances are often linked to chronic pain that disrupts daily activities and reduces quality of life. If the underlying cause of the muscle imbalance is not identified, it can be extremely difficult to treat the pain.

Learn more about beneficial strategies that can help you identify, prevent, or target muscle imbalances in this month’s featured article.
